United Kingdom 19.06.2025

Major Incident Declared on A55, Main access route to Port of Holyhead.

North Wales Police have declared a major incident on the A55 due to a fire on the westbound carriageway. Both directions of the A55 currently remain closed, with no confirmed time for reopening, as emergency services continue to work at the scene.

Although the fire has now been extinguished, crews are carrying out further inspections to ensure it has not spread to internal sections of the A55 tunnel and to fully assess the extent of the damage.

A diversion is in place via the A470 and A5. Please note that this alternative route is slower and passes through single carriageway roads in the Snowdonia National Park, which is likely to cause delays for traffic en route to the Port of Holyhead.

As the A55 is the primary access route to the Port, these delays may impact ferry crossings scheduled for this evening.
