The designated operator of Japan, Japan Post, wishes to inform the designated operators of other Union member countries that, in the light of the new import requirements introduced by the US executive order dated 30 July 2025, it is temporarily suspending acceptance of open or closed transit items containing goods destined for the United States of America. This measure will take effect on 20 August 2025, in accordance with article 17-013 of the Convention Regulations. Any transit or misrouted items containing goods destined for the United States and arriving at Japan’s international mail processing centres will be returned to origin.

Tsunami-Warning disrupts postal operations across Japan: Media sources on July 30 report that Japan Post Bank Co., Ltd. has suspended counter operations at 455 post offices nationwide, primarily in Pacific coastal areas from Hokkaido to Okinawa in Japan, following the tsunami warning triggered by the 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. Mail deliveries are expected to be delayed due to flight and ship cancellations.

Japan Post have updated that the situation has now improved after the impact of the earthquake in January but there is still a lot of rubble in certain areas which continues to effect their operation.

The postcode areas which remain affected are 9270000 – 9289999 and delays may be experienced as result.

Due to limited flight capacity delays could be expected with the transportation of inbound and outbound mail to Japan.

Japan is currently experiencing extensive delays due is being caused by the crisis in Ukraine. Airlines have limited their capacity and are having to take more complex routes which is creating delays.
