The designated operator of Sri Lanka, the Department of Posts, wishes to inform Union member countries and their designated operators that the entire country is experiencing extreme weather conditions and a red level cyclone warning has been issued. Heavy rain and strong winds are causing severe flooding and landslides.As a result, operations across the entire postal network have been suspended with effect from 27 November 2025. Accordingly, delays are to be expected for all mail operations and the Department of Posts will be unable to meet declared delivery standards for all mail until further notice.

Further to EmIS 150/2025, the designated operator of Sri Lanka, the Department of Posts, wishes to inform other Union member countries and their designated operators that the trade union action that began on 17 August 2025 ended on 24 August 2025 at 16.00 local time. All mail operations have now returned to normal.

Sri Lanka 18.08.2025

The designated operator of Sri Lanka, the Department of Posts, wishes to inform Union member countries and their designated operators of trade union action that commenced at 16.00 (local time) on 17 August 2025. As most of its postal employees are members of the unions involved, the Department of Posts will be unable to maintain its regular delivery standards or ensure normal clearance of mail consignments at air and maritime facilities for the duration of the strike. Disruption to services should therefore be expected until further notice.

Postal workers launch nationwide strike : Media sources reported on July 14 that workers of the Joint Postal Trade Union Front (JPTU) have launched a nationwide postal strike across Sri Lanka from 00:00 local time on July 15. The union announced that the action will involve the complete withdrawal from all overtime duties across post offices and administrative offices, which will result in severe disruptions to postal services across the country. At the time of writing, it is unclear how long the strike will last.

Due to the ongoing fuel and power crisis and public transport issues, the Government of Sri Lanka has imposed a temporarily restricted work plan for Government institutions from 28th June 2022. 

In view of the Government’s decision, the Department of Posts has temporarily limited all operational and administrative functions to three working days per week. As a result, all post office functions including deliveries will be scheduled for Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays only. The remaining working days Monday, Friday and Saturday will be classed as remote working days.
